This is a shot that is very different from the previous ones. I've always been interested in mythology and it was a perfect treat for me. I went to this amazing exhibition at "the Culture Shop" where they were showcasing Indian mythology and spirituality. As you can very well see, it was a treat...and guess what, Mom bought these two artifacts!
The brown show-piece is a piece of art depicting the love between Radha & Lord Krishna. It is one of the most interesting stories that I've ever read. Lord Krishna never got married to Radha but yet it was and is one of the most immortal love stories ever in India. Behind the show-piece we have a wall-hanging which shows us the "Om" in the form of a tree with the sun behind it, as you can see. The "Om" is a sacred syllable in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. It is normally uttered at the beginning or at the end of a veda or a mantra or a puja (prayer). Really, try chanting "Om" ten times by closing your eyes and sitting peacefully and you will realize how enlightening it is! If the beginning of anything that you start is as pure and as peaceful, there is no doubt that light will for all the while fall on you and protect you from darkness...just as the wall-hanging.
Somehow "Om" always reminds me of Hermann Hesse's "Siddhartha". The word "Om" has never really had such a deep impact on me before I read this in the book - then the great song of a thousand voices consisted of one word : Om - perfection. For all of you who haven't read the book, I highly recommend the book to you...as I shall go fetch the book again and read it once more now...
For Om...

Rahul: Wow -- you REALLY got me with this! I love the story of Lord Krishna and Radha. A lot of the depictions I see of them look to me like Bollywood posters, but this is beautiful. As for the Om, I have one tattooed on me! My yoga teacher just burned a CD for me; the main thing on it is 45 minutes of a group of men chanting "om." I put it on my iPod, and when the subway is super crowded and annoying, I listen to that & I'm the calmest person on the train.
How nice that your mom bought these!
btw, I read Siddhartha when I was your age. Maybe time to read it again?
I did not know the story of Lord Krishna and Radha and I haven't read Siddhartha - yet. I am continuously learning from your blog, Rahul.
