jail

I took this shot today, as I was getting back from an appointment, at Mahalaxmi. This is the exterior of the Arthur Road Jail.

Built in 1926, the Arthur Road Jail is India's oldest and largest prison. It is the house for most of the city's prisoners. It is located near the Saat Rasta, which is between the Mahalaxmi and the Chichpokli railway stations in the southern part of the city. It was upgraded in 1994 to become a Central Prison and its official name is Bombay Central Prison. But, for the people of Mumbai, the heavily-guarded prison has always been known as Arthur Road Jail.

The jail was built to accommodate 1074 prisoners but the average number of inmates is generally over 3,000—far exceeding its capacity in terms of space, sanitation and other facilities.

A few decades ago, this prison was one of the most feared in India, because of the treatment prisoners received from the inmate overseers. The cells were overcrowded and the prisoners had to sleep on blankets infested with lice. They were allowed to wash each day, but the ratio of water was very little. If they stood up against the overseers they were punished in terrible ways.

Somehow, it has always been a wish to film a prisoner in this Jail or document somebody who walks in and out of this space. I've always wanted to interact with a few prisoners and understand why they did/do what they did/do...

For this jail and all the history...

PS - I'm curious to know whether you guys are for life imprisonment or capital punishment?

I hope not too many people ended up here after all the celebrating.

I will answer the PS question on another day! How diplomatic or cowardly depending on your view. Hapy New Year to everyone and especially you dear Rahul!

Well, in my opinion, it completely depends on the crime!! I feel for certain cases, capital punishment is also very less!! But, for the rest, I'm more for life imprisonment...as I believe it can change the psyche at some pt!!
